WHAT THIS TOOL DOES
A small tool.
A clear purpose.
The Next Step Builder helps you write down one task, turn it into a visible first action, notice one thing that could make starting easier, and leave a return note for later. The examples are starting points you can edit. It does not analyze you or generate medical advice.
If you prefer paper, get the free fillable Next Step Card. You can also use the free task breakdown template, see 20 task initiation examples, or read how to start when a task feels overwhelming.
HOW TO BREAK DOWN A TASK
Make the next move
easy to see.
1. Name one outcome. Start with the task that is taking up attention now. “Prepare the monthly report” is more useful than trying to plan the whole week at once.
2. Choose one observable action. Replace broad verbs such as organize, prepare, or deal with something concrete: open the file, find the form, write the heading, put the cups in the sink.
3. Remove one immediate obstacle. If the action depends on a missing file, decision, charger, document, or answer from another person, that dependency may be the real next step.
4. Leave yourself a way back. Before stopping, write what changed and what you would do next. That way, restarting does not require rebuilding the whole plan.
WORKED EXAMPLES
From a big task
to one first action.
Presentation: “Finish the presentation” becomes “open the deck and write the title of slide one.” If you are missing the brief, finding the latest brief becomes the setup step.
Admin: “Submit the application” becomes “open the form and fill the first field you already know.” If a reference number is missing, asking for that number may come before the form.
Home: “Clean the kitchen” becomes “put the cups from the table into the sink.” You can decide what happens next after that visible action is complete.
For a longer worked process, see how to break tasks into smaller steps. If the task contains several dependencies, the task breakdown template gives you a simple place to map them.
ABOUT THE BUILDER
A few things to
know first.
Is the Next Step Builder free?
Yes. You can use the builder without creating an account. It is designed as a simple planning exercise for turning one task into a smaller next action.
Does Towardly save what I type?
No. Your entries stay in the page while you use the builder and are not sent to Towardly. Reloading or leaving the page clears them. If you choose to save your plan, your browser creates the text file locally.
How small should I make the first step?
Small enough that you can picture the exact action and tell when it is done. Instead of “work on the report,” try “open the report and add the first heading.” You can make the step smaller again if it still feels unclear.
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to use this tool?
No. The builder is for anyone who wants a clearer way to begin a task. It is an educational planning tool, not a diagnostic test, treatment, or substitute for professional care.
